I have put alot of use on this set and haven’t broken any peices. I expected the swivel to bust, but it’s holding up. Now the bad, the black coating is almost completely gone on the most used sockets and there is a tinge of rust that formed on them. I use them almost daily though, so the grease and oil atmosphere they’re in hasn’t let them rust real bad. The laser etched numbers are gone, but the stamped numbers are still on there. The side latches on the case broke after about a month of heavy use, but the metal latches are still holding on. Overall though, this is still my go to set for any application where i can fit my 3/8 impact gun. I really love this set, but don’t expect it to hold up perfect to heavy use.
Good case with positive closure.
Great sockets so far – i use them with a dewalt impact driver and have worked well getting stubborn lug nuts off a wheel (thanks local garage for over tightening them again). Also worked well driving concrete screws into a wall. Nice selection of sizes and nice case, too.
Almost got the sunex set, but this has a 21 mm socket. Great complete set of 3/8 cromo impacts. Perfect for my milwaukee fuel impact wrench.
Like: having all my 3/8’dr impact sockets, sae & metric, deep & std, all in one sturdy, formed box with 2 hd clamps for secure closure. Also like the fact each socket is stamped and printed with size. Dislike: the lead-in bevel for many of the hex sockets have a sharp edge which may damage the fasteners, especially when used with an impact gun. I’d like to buy more gearwrench 1/2′ dr impact socket sets, but they aren’t as conveniently packaged. I would like to have deep and shallow 1/2’dr sae impacts in one sturdy form-fitted box, and deep & shallow 1/2’dr metric impacts in another sturdy, form-fitted box, as well. But for some reason they don’t package them that way.
These are incredibly well-made with excellent packaging. They work perfect with my milwaukee impact driver.
I got this kit to go along with my 3/8′ impact wrench. The case it came in is super nice and pretty sturdy. It’s got foam on one side and 4 ‘locks’ on the outside to make sure it stays closed in the event that you drop it. (2 on the sides and 2 in the front handle area) each socket spot is clearly marked in the case and i’d like to point out that these do not snap in the spots they are loose so you can just grab and go so you don’t have to pry the sockets out. The sockets themselves are very clearly marked with silver on the black finish so it stands out. If the markings ever wear off each one is also stamped with its size. The finish on the sockets is subpar but maybe thats from just left over oily residue. (they’re gonna get dirty anyways) overall a great starter kit that can complete most of your projects for a great price. I’ve attached some pictures of everything hop this helps.
I’m just a ‘hobby’ mechanic, but i’ve beat on a few of these with a compact astro pneumatic compact gun, as well as an adaptor on a half inch snap-on magnesium impact. In particular, the 15mm deep socket eventually got a really tight, rusty catalytic conveyor nut off, and the 1/2-3/8 impact adaptor (not part of this kit) ended up twisted up. The socket, including the square drive hole, still looks brand new. :)no one makes a 3/8 impact that makes anywhere near the torque of that half inch impact, so they should easily last a good long time with what they’re designed for. The case is also nicely made, with a real hinge and metal latches. So it shouldn’t just break from fatigue like a cheaper ‘bending plastic’ hinge. And it has a complete selection of sizes anyone’s likely to use with a 3/8 impact gun. Overall, i’m really happy with this purchase, as with most gear wrench tools.
I was shopping around, i usually buy craftsman. I was comparing this set with a craftsman set. Works excellent with any repairs on the farm. I also bought a dewalt dcf883m2 20-volt max lithium ion 3/8-inch impact wrench kit with hog ring to go with it. For most repairs i do not touch my hand socket set.
This is a nice 3/8 set of impact sockets. It even comes with a wobble extension. I’ve been using this set on light auto work work a milwaukee 3/9 impact driver and o don’t have any issues with the set. I’ve also ordered the deep sockets but have not used them yet.
This is the best set of sockets i have found. Feel great and even with a torque gun of 500 foot lbs of torque haven’t been able to break them. You can’t go wrong with this set especially because they have a lifetime warranty. I’m so happy with these and the price is what makes then unbelievable.
So are nearly every other major brand toolmaker’s now unless you are buying tools as a pro: snap-on and sk professional tools (note my distinction) are for the pros, and these are suited for the advanced diyer and diehard hobbiest. As i have said in other tool review, i’m an old grey-haired engineer that fixes everything myself. I purchased this gearwrench set to help round out a set i’m putting together at our other property so i don’t have to keep bringing tools with me. I received the set complete with all appropriate sizes, rust-free, and wet-coated with oil for corrosion protection. Many people do not understand black oxide coating, and you must keep it oiled or waxed to resist formation of iron oxide in humid storage. Glad to see the set was shipped wet like this, and i have stripped and coated with my favorite choice of protection (white lightning chain lube). Anyway, i check the sizing for each with a go/no-go set and all were true. Here’s the punchline and most important, i chose this set over craftsman set 35037. Craftsman mechanics tools have been made in china for many years now, but since acquisition by stanley black & decker they turned this once-prominant brand to absolute junk.I purchased 35037 after my nephew praised his set.
. Just discovered 12-20-2018: missing 10 mm deepwell socket. Has two 11 mm deepwell sockets instead. Bummer, as 10 mm is one of the most used in automotive work. Here are the specifications for the GearWrench 84916N SAE/Metric 3/8″ Drive Impact Socket Set:
- Make sure this fits
by entering your model number.
- Impact Sockets built from chrome molybdenum alloy steel (CR-MO) for exceptional strength and durability
- Off-corner loading design reduces fastener rounding
- Black phosphate corrosion-resistant coating laser etched with high-visibility markings and hard stamped with size labels
- Deep 6-point sockets with chamfered openings and an attachment port compatible with traditional ratchets
- Parallel neck down design on 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, and 11mm sockets allow improved access around restricted fasteners
- Meets or exceeds ASME B107.2 specifications for proven strength
Note: if you get the 84916n set, it is not the set in this picture. Com to see the actual set, the small deep well sockets are tapered down much farther. I got these to replace an old kobalt/williams usa set that i had lost and broken a few of. They are a little thicker than chrome sockets, but not by much (much thinner than my cheap impact sockets), and i haven’t run into a situation yet where the slight difference has made a difference, so i use them as both impact and hand sockets.
Nice to have a well organized set of sockets. I am a new loyal user of gearwrench. I have already invested a good sum on the products and have no issues getting more. Only downside is it is a mix of sae and metric, wish they sold the set separately. However, the mix is a good thing if you don’t want to many different cases to be choosing from. Overall, i am more than just pleased, i am very satisfied with the set.
I’ve been looking for a decent impact set for a while and this is the one. I’ve gone through multiple impact sets and this one works the best with my dewalt gun.
I gave this set a good workout this weekend and found this to be a great performer and an even better value. I used this gwearwrench set with a new dewalt 3/8 cordless 20-volt impact driver and an 18-inch breaker bar to do tire rotations, a brake job, install new sway bar end links, new bushings, and remove the subframe. I had every socket and extension i needed plus the universal joint let me get to hard get at bolts. The case is really nice with locks that hold it closed and a real hinge so i can expect to use this a very long time. The sockets fit nuts and bolts properly and being a 6 point design will not round them off as easy when you have a really tight one. I did manage to scratch a few and wear off the laser etching on the 14 mm but that was after being dosed in brake cleaner, anti-seize, liquid wrench, pb, and brake fluid (don’t ask). If this had a place to put my ratchet this set is all i would use. After one year of use, i am still very happy with this set, no signs of stress. I have found these really excel when working on out door power equipment (riding mowers, roto-tillers, generators, etc.
Only used a few of the sockets so far but also used them for hand tightening and the worked great. Price dropped $20 so i ordered them and i love them. Case is very nice and sturdy as well. Locks down at 4 points, 2 on the front and 1 one each side with plastic snap style. Sockets on the top lid stay stuck in there and bottom tray they just lay in there.
The sockets and storage case are nicely labeled for easy sight recognition. The socket, extensions and swivel adapter all slide nicely on my torque impact drivers. I have not used them yet, hence i did not comment on durability. However, based on the reviews it should be ok. Buy recommendation for sure.
Reviews from purchasers :
- Let’s get this out of the way Yes, this set is made in China.
- Best set of 3/8 impact sockets.
- Great sockets so far – I use them with a
Got the 3/8-inch set for my aircat 1076-xl kevlar composite compact impact wrench. Reminds me of the old joke,’ ‘what’s the difference between a $10 bottle of merlot and a $50 bottle?’answer: ‘$40 bucks. I bought the 1/2-inch gearwrench impact drive set, too. There might be better drive sockets out there but i can’t tell the difference. And i’ve been a mechanic for 50 years.
